MSP430G2553: why Crystal included in MSP430Gxx launch pad kit

Part Number: MSP430G2553

Hi all,

I have a doubt, why a piece of crystal was included in MSP430G launch pad kit.

What is use of that? On which case we need to use tat one?

In MSP430G2553, having internal oscillator?

Regards,

Anbu.

  • Hi Anbu,

There is an internal oscillator on the MSP430G2553. However, using an external crystal will provide a more stable clock. This is only necessary for certain applications, so it is up to you whether you use it. Please see the MSP430G2553 User's Guide (www.ti.com/.../slau144) for more information on clocks and oscillators.

    Regards,
    Nathan
  • Hi Nathan,

If I solder crystal in MSP430G launch pad, Should I need to change any jumpers.
How to configure?  Any impact will happened? What is the internal clock freq.

    Regards,
    Anbu.
  • Hi Anbu
You should not need to change any jumpers, but you will need to select the correct clock input by configuring the necessary registers. Please see the User's Guide for that information. The product page for the MSP430 will also contain example code that you can use to get started. The included crystal is ~32kHz. Again, please see the User's Guide and datasheet for information on the clock frequencies. The frequencies for that specific device will be listed in the datasheet (www.ti.com/.../msp430g2553).

    Regards,
    Nathan
