CCS/MSP-FET: Could not set device Vcc

Part Number: MSP-FET
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, MSPDS

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

CCS v7.1.0.00016

Windows 10 Pro

MSP-FET SN:180300301

I just bought the new FET. We have used the old MSP-FETU430IF for probably 8 years or so. The old FET works still and the new FET works on a colleagues machine running windows 7 with the same version of CCS. Problem exists whether the target board is connected or not. Using the same JTAG connection for the old and new FET.

New FET works with UniFlash on the both my machine and my colleagues machine. UniFlash did update the firmware in the FET on the first use.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled CCS. We don't want to upgrade to a new version at this point in our development cycle. We can use the old FETs in the meantime.

Any help or tips for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Shawn,

    1. When you run CCS 7.1 on your Win 10 machine, was there a dialog requesting to update the new FET?
    2. Can you please check, if the newest MSP Flasher on your machine works with the new FET? www.ti.com/.../msp430-flasher

    Thanks and best regards,
    Andre
  • 1. No, CCS 7.1 did not update the firmware.

    2. MSP Flasher version 1.3.18 does work with the new FET.

MSP Flasher updated the firmware in the FET, but it and UniFlash (v 4.2.0.1490) are requiring different versions and taking turns trying to update it. I thought they were both the most recent versions. CCS doesn't seem to care which version the FET has.

I looked at the log.txt files for both the firmware update and flash write with MSP Flasher and see nothing of interest.

  • Hi,

can you please check what MSPDS version is used in in CCSv7.1?

You can see that by checking the properties of the msp430.dll.
The DLL is located in <INSTALL_DIR>\ccsv7\ccs_base\DebugServer\drivers.

    Andre
  • File version is 3.9.1.2.

  • Hi,

This version does not support the new MSP-FET. The MSP-FETv2 support starts with version 3.9.2.15
3.9.1.2 is is shipped with CCSv7.0 and not v7.1.

You can get a newer version in CCSv7.1 by updating the MSP430 tool-chain components in CCS.

    Best regards,
    Andre
  • OK, understood. I will look at my colleague's machine and see what version his dll is. It seems odd that we would have exactly the same version of CCS and a different version dll.

We will upgrade our development suite at the first opportunity.

    Thank you.

  • Now that I re-read your message I am still confused. My CCS version is 7.1.0.00016. That is >= 7.1, correct? A fresh install of this yields version MSP430.dll version 3.9.1.2.

Also, now when I check for software updates to the tool chain, I get this:

  • Shawn,

I confirm the behaviour you have seen. CCS v7.1 comes with 3.9.1.2 but should come with 3.9.2.15. That is a bug.

    The workaround is:
    1. Download and install CCS v7.1 --> DLL=3.9.1.2
    2. Search and install updates --> DLL=3.9.2.15

I'm going to check the error message you see and come back to you.

    Best regards,
    Andre

"already marked it as resolved before I realized that the answer doesn’t make sense. I said in my first message which version of CCS was installed.

When I tried to update the MSP430 tool chain components I got the error in the follow up message which I suspect isn’t being noticed because the thread was already marked as resolved.

Then I deselected the component that was causing the error and tried to upgrade. It failed halfway through and left me with a program I could not uninstall from “add remove programs”.

I then downloaded the 7.2 installer, installed and uninstalled, just to get rid of it.

I deleted the c:\ti folder and reinstalled 7.1 from scratch.

My old MSP-FETU430IF is now broken, which was working before and keeping me able to develop."
  • We have elected to upgrade to CCS v8.1. The new MSP-FET is functioning properly now. Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I wish you all the best for your project(s).

    Best regards,
    Andre
