MSP-EXP430FR5739: jtag connection

Part Number: MSP-EXP430FR5739
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET,

I am trying to connect the MSP-EXP430FR5739 to the Jtag programmer MSP-FET to verify a design. The connections in the datasheet for the FR5739 device show the connections for a 4 wire but another document shows that the device is only capable of 2wire jtag. can you provide the correct connections to link these devices together to allow programming via code composer studio?

  • Hi Jonathan,

That LaunchPad has 2 jumpers () shown here that you need to remove if in are connecting an external MSP-FET programmer.  Connect the MSP-FET RST/SBWTDIO pin to the pin labeled RST on the PCB, and the MSP-FET TCK/SBWTCK pin to the TEST pin on the PCB.

  • Hi Dennis

This didn't work for me and I have tried it on a couple of different boards. Is it possible that I have acv8dently blown the jtag fuses?

    • Is there any way to debug the Connection?
  • Hi Jonathan,

The MSP-FET will need to be connected as shown on page 23 of the MSP430 Hardware Tools Guide.

Note, since the FR5739 LaunchPad is powered you do need to connect the LaunchPad +3.3v to the MSP-FET JTAG pin4 (VCC_TARGET), else nothing will work.  The MSP-FET uses the applied voltage from the LaunchPad to power the internal level shifters.  The MSP-FET is smart enough to figure out you are using the 2-wire SPY-BY-WIRE connections.
