DRV8825: DRV8825 driver failure

Dear Sir/Madam

DRV8825 stepper motor controller IC used in our project. We are designed as per data sheet recommend specification. In our prototype board some failure found and rectified with help of TI forum discussion ,Now we have same failure found DRV 8825 in our design . MODE 0, MODE 1, MODE 2, DIR, nENABL, AVREF, BVREF are short with GROUND pin.

Driver IC failure occur any one of short like ( MODE 0 -GROUND )pin in 35 out of 50 board . Kindly give solution for avoid these failure.

Hey Sarath,

What bulk capacitance are you using in your system? It could have voltage spikes damaging the chip.

Could you provide more details as to when the chip is failing? Is it after a certain amount of time or burn-in, immediately after assembly, or after months of use? Have you tried using a EVM board for the same purpose to see if it has the same failure?

That driver is pretty old, released in 2010. Could you consider switching to a more modern driver, such as the DRV8434?

we are giving 0.3v as Vref form MCU.what's the minimum Vref? While increasing the Vref Motor is getting heat .

Sarath,

I went ahead and split out this thread as a separate post as I just realized a new person jumped on the post with a different issue.

Vref = 0.3V is OK, but current accuracy will be affected. Is it possible to increase your sense resistor and this will allow you to use a higher Vref for the same current.

Are you still seeing a high failure rate like the original post? Can you share some images from the top of your devices?
