DRV8824-Q1: Motor Driver Thermal Shutdown

Part Number: DRV8824-Q1

Hi,

One of our requirement has a test to check Over Current Protection(OCP) and Thermal Shutdown(TSD). How to simulate this to get nFAULT pin Low. Kindly help us to resolve this.

Regards

  • Hello,

For OCP, the output would have to be shorted to GND or power supply.  There is no way to force the device into an OCP otherwise.

For TSD, maximum full scale current can be selected to push device into thermal protection.  Or, an external method like forced hot air can be used to push ambient temperature up to cause a TSD.

    Regards,

  • Hey Ryan,

We tried external method, we forced hot air using temperature controlled Hot air gun at 200degree C but nFAULT pin was not driven low. Can you explain how to try the first method to set full scale current?

  • Hello,

The OCP specifications are in the datasheet.  As long as the short to GND or supply exceeds 5A, the device will report a fault.  It could trip as soon as 1.8A.

    Ryan
