DRV8873-Q1: Use IPROPI signal for ripple counting on BDC motor

Tool/software:

Hello,

Is it possible to use the signal from the IPROPI pin to perform ripple counting of the brushed dc motor being driven by the DRV8873-Q1 or is the signal not meant for that kind of high resolution analysis?

Thank you

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your question.

Normally ripple counting requires in-line current sensing. DRV8873-Q1 has IPROPI on high side FET, therefore waveform will not be same as in-line.

DRV8706-Q1/8714-Q1/DRV8718-Q1 gate driver family can support in-line like bellow. FYI.

  • Thank you for your response Shinya. I was trying to avoid using an external shunt resistor.  The DRV8214 driver is exactly what I'm looking for, but just doesn't have the 10A peak current rating I need.  But the DRV8214 has the ripple counting feature built in through an internal current mirror, I was hoping the IPROPI pin would provide something like that current mirror capability that could be used to count ripples in the motor current waveform.

  • Hi,

Thank you for your feedback. DRV8214 is not automotive device(non Q1). If 10A is needed, I think DRV8706-Q1/DRV8714-Q1 is what we can propose.
