BQ40Z50-R2: RSOC, ASOC, Remaining Capacity have suddenly dropped to zero

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Hello. I have hard to catch problem on some battery packs. At one time bq40z50-R2 outputs RSOC, ASOC, RemCapacity = 0 at normal voltage(more than 7.6V for 2S) but when I push the button, leds show that battery have more than half of capacity. Some batteries are repaired after reprogramming with golden image(before such batteries have 0x0e UpdateStatus in GasGauging). Some batteries are repaired after full charge.

1) At what time does RSOC, ASOC, RemCapacity updates? Do they depend on Ra and Qmax values update as SoH? I know that such values depend on FCC(not SoH FCC) that depend on temperature and discharge current. I draw max 15 Amps from batteries, usually around 6-12 Amps. Minimal ambient temperature was only around 0-5 Celsius.

2) How is it possble that such values dropped to zero? What circumstances can lead to that situation?

3)How can I fix it and how can I prevent that situation? Can you give some guidelines for that?

My BqStudio settings attached to that message.

  • Hello Ivan,

If you could capture the occurrence with bqStudio logging it would be very helpful for debug. You can check the TRM for the update conditions of FCC and RemCap.

It would be hard to tell exactly what's going on without more data, if the gauge anticipates a high load (depending on your load select) or there is a large temperature change, this can cause the RemCap to drop to 0. All gauging done is based on the Ra and Qmax parameters.

If the LEDs are indicating otherwise, this may be a communication issue, since the LEDs should follow what the gauge is reporting for RSOC (if that's what the LEDs are set to report)

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
