LM53600-Q1: LM53601-Q1-ADJ at 3.0V

Part Number: LM53600-Q1

I would like to use the LM53601-Q1-ADJ to produce 3.0V from an input voltage of Vin = 12V +/-15% (10.2 < Vin < 13.8 V).  The desired output voltage is slightly below the recommended operating conditions given in Section 7.3 of the data sheet, but note 3 following the table suggests this should be possible and recommends contacting TI for details.

Output capacitance will be > 40 uF and I intend to use a Bourns SRP4012TA-4R7M 4.7 uH inductor having a saturation current of 2.5 A.  I plan to drive the SYNC input at 1.95 MHz so the converter will operate in FPWM mode at constant frequency even under light load conditions.

I see that a similar question was asked on the e2e form but for the LM53600 operating at 3.1V.  I understand bias current would be supplied by the +12V input when output voltage is less than 3.2 V which will be acceptable in this case.  Also, duty cycle should be no less than 20% across input voltage range and at the indicated clock frequency, on time should be more than 100 ns which exceeds specified minimum given in Table 7.7.

Do you expect any issues with using the LM53601 as described above?

  • Hello,

The minimum controllable on time Ton min time (max) = 80.5ns. When running in FPWM, the D = 3/12*(1/2.2MHz) = 113ns which is greater than Ton min specified in the table 7.7. I don't see any issues with using the device in this application.

    Hope this helps?
  • Thanks David,

Agreed that minimum on-time should not be a consideration. I really just wanted to confirm that aside from minimum on-time there are no other limitations I should be aware of for low voltage operation. If not we can resolve.

    Best Regards,
    Gerald
  • Hello,

As discussed in the Datasheet, the only thing you will incur is higher Iq when setting Vout lower than 3.3V. VCC will be biased from Vin. Other than that, no issues. this is detailed in Foot note (3) of section 7,3 in the datasheet.

    Hope this helps?
