During charging, the led (connected to the STAT pin) started flashing at 1Hz which shows a charging problem.
After disconnecting and reconnecting the charger, the led flashes faster.

Can this be related (as I read in a forum) to the fact that the battery is disconnected and the charger tries to charge the battery and then realizes that it is absent and tries again. Hence a fast flashing on the STAT pin?Thank you

Thank you for your answer but finally we looked into the problem and found that fast flashing occurs when charging via USB from a PC instead of a USB charger from the mains. So the current supplied to the charger is more limited. Can the charger go to safety if it can't get enough current input?

The charger still works when current limiting. Please refer to 9.3.2.2 Dynamic Power Management on the d/s for the details.
