AM3358: Downgrading the processor

Part Number: AM3358
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMIC110, AM3351, AM1802, AM3352, AM1808, OMAPL138

Hi,

I am development an application that currently runs on the Beaglebone Green Wireless and makes use of PyBluez to control the Bluetooth radio. We know that the AM3358 of the BeagleBone is an over power processor for the application have.

My question is, Can we migrate to a different SoC like AM1802/AM3351/AMIC110? this without compromising the use of Linux, Python and the Bluetooth stack or the eMMC space management.

Regards,

Carlos

  • Hi,

AM1802 is an entirely different processor and it's not supported on this forum. As for which AM335x device you will choose, this depends entirely on your requirements. You should estimate your processing requirements and choose the part that suits you best.
  • Hi Biser,

It is my understanding that the AM1802 is still a Sitara Processor.

The question is more inclined towards the difficulty of migrate from one platform to the other, but maintaining the same or a similar Linux distribution, in this case Debian.

I assume that this migration should happen flawlessly between members of the AM335x family.

    Kind regards,
    Carlos
  • Cost and feature wise, it would be recommended to stay with AM335x family, since it has DDR3 and you can always check AM3351, for cost reduction perspective.
  • Carlos,

AM180x family of processors are good devices, however today they are not supported by our mainline Linux offering, called the TI Linux Processor SDK. You'll find people in the community who have run many flavors of Linux on AM180x, so it is certainly possible.

Regarding AM335x, yes, you can migrate seamlessly within that product family with the TI Linux Processor SDK.

Regarding Debian, it is likely to work as well since the support for the AM335x family is mainline, however I have not personally tested an AM3352 with the Beagle community release.

    Regards,
    Mike
  • Carlos,

We are currently working in adding AM1808/OMAPL138 to the TI Linux Processor SDK software offering. The integration should be completed in 2Q17 timeframe. This should allow for easier migration between all devices in the Sitara family.

But from support and collaboration perspective, I agree with Michael that AM335x has more features supported and we have larger developer community on AM335x than AM1808/OMAPL138.
