AM4376: Performance of eMMC: 4-bit vs 8-bit mode

Part Number: AM4376

Team,

do we have performance tests that deal with AM437x and eMMC?
Are there significant performance differences in 4-bit vs 8-bit mode?

Our EVMs always use 4-bits.

Thanks

  • Hi
    I will dig in to see if we have any internal data or validation data around this.

    Do you have more background on the query

    1) Is the customer using TI SDKs?

    2) Are they using Linux or RTOS?

    3) Do they have a certain performance/throughput requirement with eMMC? Assuming they are looking for higher performance compared to what is documented for 4 bits ?

    Regards

  • Thanks for looking into this Mukul.

    1) Is the customer using TI SDKs?
    -> Yes.

    2) Are they using Linux or RTOS?
    -> Linux.

    3) Do they have a certain performance/throughput requirement with eMMC? Assuming they are looking for higher performance compared to what is documented for 4 bits ?
    -> The intention is to get an idea if there is a significant performance boost compared to 4-bit mode when using eMMC for Linux. Has anybody ever measured this before?

  • Hi Mukul,

    any update if we have any internal data or validation data around this?

  • Hi Frank
    Sorry for the delay. I did not find anything from validation data on this.
    I am checking one more time from some additional linux folks, if they have run into this and have some data to share based on prior customer support. Will let you know what I find asap.

  • Hi Frank

    I wasn't able to find any additional data in house, but a colleague pointed me to some data on AM335x

    The above link has data from AM335x BBB which suggest that the read performance is about 30% better, but write performance is actually close to the same.  We think the AM437x trends will be similar as the topology is more or less similar.

    I think this is the best I can do. Hope this helps some.

    Will be marking the post as "TI thinks its resolved" given it has been open from my side for long time, as always, feel free to post follow up questions and reopen as needed.

    Regards
