Hi Team,

We are booting linux on A72 core from  SD Card.

We have a binary "application.elf "for MCU domain R5F0.

Through no-boot (Debug mode) from CCS we are able to load the Application into MCU Domain R5F0.

Please provide the steps to load appliacation.elf from SD CARD using Linux Bootloader (SPL,U-boot)

Regards,

Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

If you use the latest Linux SDK we already are loading a firmware at SPL level for MCU domain R5F0.
That is in rootfs partition of SD card /lib/firmware/j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw which is a symbolic link to:
    /lib/firmware/pdk-ipc/ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release.strip.xer5f.

So you could try replacing the /lib/firmware/pdk-ipc/ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release.strip.xer5f with your application.elf.

    Best Regards,
    Keerthy

  • Hi Keerthy,

    Thanks for reply

I followed the above steps you mentioned,

We  replace the soft link to application.elf  and rebooted the EVM, facing booting issue.

Steps to change the soft link and rebooting logs available in the attached boot.txt file.

Please let me know if we miss any step.

    Regards,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

What is the application doing and where does it get copied. Mostly likely it is overwriting ATF in MSMC. Please make sure the application is not corruption other images in the system.

    Thanks and regards,

    Lokesh

  • Hi Lokesh,

We are using MCU R5F0 for CAN communication stack. Please let us know which are all memories used by boot process. So that will make sure that our elf doesn't load into that location.

    Regrads,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

Generally it is the other way. Please make sure the address for our R5F falls under memory regions assigned to it. You can look at reserved memory regions for your R5 in DT https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-linux-kernel/ti-linux-kernel/tree/arch/arm64/boot/dts/ti/k3-j721e-som-p0.dtsi?h=ti-linux-5.4.y#n29

    Thanks and regards,

    Lokesh

  • Hi Lokesh,

    Thank you for your response.

We have updated our linker file. now, booting is successful.

if boot is successful, we are expecting CAN frame in MCU_CAN0. As "application.elf" is a AUTOSAR CAN stack.

But we are not receiving any CAN frames from MCU_CAN0.

we had tested the elf with ccs. with ccs debugger we loaded the elf into MCU R5F0 core and we are getting CAN frames.

We are using "ti.csl.init.aer5f" from "psdk_rtos_auto_j7_06_02_00_21\pdk\packages\ti\csl\lib\j721e\r5f\release" as startup.

we have added --entry_point = _resetvectors and mapped ".rstvectors" section to "0x41C00000".

    PFA. linker file used.

Please let us know whether we have mapped the reset vector to proper location and do we need to do anything else to get the control to our main function in our elf from boot loader.

    Regards,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

My guess is that modification to the linker file to avoid conflicting memory placement boots linux but is not loading the firmware.

So it is not a problem with the CAN communication but loading the firmware itself. Do you have any prints in the Application.elf which can verify that the application is actually being loaded?

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi Karan,

    Thank you for your replay.

We don't have any prints in application.elf. we have tried following steps to verify whether the firmware is loaded.

An initialized char array of values - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 was mapped to section. APP_SHAREDMEMORY which is at addr = 0xa0000000.

If firmware is loaded properly, we are expecting those values in that memory location.

from Linux we used devmem2 command to read the data at location 0xa0000000, but we didn't get those values.

Based on above verification, firmware is not loaded.

if above verification method is wrong, please provide steps to verify through print.

    Regards,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

The MCU R5F is special since the same core is also used for booting in Linux (R5 SPL). The Linux boot flow has the R5 SPL running from MCU SRAM, and it will just perform a load and branch to the entry point address point from the new application firmware image that is being early-booted. There is no new core reset performed (unlike the ROM to R5 SPL switch), and as such the application firmware has to be a cooperative application (conform to the mode that the core has come up, stay away from the memory that the R5 SPL is running from, and not overwrite the MPU entries used by the R5 SPL).

The MCU R5F comes up with ATCM disabled. Your linker file above is placing the vectors back at MCU SRAM beginning which falls into the memory region used by R5 SPL. Please refer to the linker command file that the ipc_echo_testb firmware for how it is done.

    https://git.ti.com/gitweb?p=processor-sdk/pdk.git;a=blob;f=packages/ti/drv/ipc/examples/common/j721e/linker_r5f_mcu1_0_btcm_sysbios.lds;h=402826b16bc6805204d400a030b90a869f590fb5;hb=refs/heads/master

  • Hi Suman,

we  have updated our linker file by referring linker_r5f_mcu1_0_btcm_sysbios.lds in ipc-echo-test example.

Please find the attached updated linker file

With the changes in the linker file booting of  j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw firmware is failing. Please find the below booting log and complete log attached.

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

Can you please halt at u-boot and try to load the firmware there? Don't boot linux yet.

    Follow http://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/docs/latest/linux/Foundational_Components_U-Boot.html#remoteproc

    Initiallize, load and then start.

Once we do this we can probably check (independent of the linux) that firmware is being loaded. Make sure the firmware you load is working standalone (with CCS or SBL).

If the above goes okay then we can look at integration with linux.

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

Is this a custom example you are trying to integrate? Or is this a part of the SDK?

For quicker round time, I would want if I can replicate it here.

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

I see that in your logs - load failed first and then happened successfully, do you know the reason?

    Regards,

    Karan

  • HI Karan,

The application.elf is a Classic AUTOSAR based CAN stack and it is not a binary available in SDK.

We followed the steps as provided in the document and it failed with the following error message

Invalid op: Trying to load/start on already running core 1
Load Remote Processor 0 with data@addr=0x90000000 1300992 bytes: Failed!

Based on the Error message we understood that the core already running. Hence we stopped the core and loaded binary again.

    Regards,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

You seem to have forgotten to add the firmware to the SDCard atleast from the above log.

    Also, at U-Boot prompt,

    Remoteproc 2 started successfully

    Starting ATF on ARM64 core...

Note that you would need to use different images for MCU R5F0 depending on where you are booting from (R5 SPL vs A72 U-Boot or A72 Kernel remoteproc). We maximize the TCMs by enabling ATCM in both A72 U-Boot and A72 Kernel, so you have to use images that start from ATCM 0x0 when booting from either of these places. If R5 SPL cannot boot the MCU R5F, it is shutdown, allowing the load and boot from A72 with a different configuration.

    regards

    Suman

  • Hi Suman,

Sorry for the attached log. We have verified the booting by placing the missing file, this time in boot we didn't get any fail this time. But still R5F is not executing(or ran and went into trap/exception).

As mentioned in above comment, we are booting from A72 U-Boot or A72 kernel. We moved the entry point of the binary to ATCM 0x0 and verified the booting, still R5F is not executing.

With the updated binary, we are able to connect R5F through CCS after booting from SD card(Boot mode = SD card and booted using Linux Bootloader). now, we loaded same binary through CCS and ran the R5F. this time R5F ran into data abort exception(in CSL, boot.asm).

currently we are debugging the reason for exception.

please let us know, whether above high lighted debug procedure is correct. Because, when we load and execute the binary through CCS in No Boot mode, there was no exception.

    PFA. updated linker file.

  • can you try this binary?

    fw.7z

  • Actions/progress from debug call:

    1. SDK CAN binary works successfully when loaded by R5 SPL as a firmware. (attached in previous reply)

    2. Linux boots -> connect CCS -> reset R5 -> load custom CAN binary -> runs to main() -> crashes in some GPT init.

    3. Arjun to put a while(1) as suggested in custom CAN application and load with R5  SPL and see from CCS if firmware loads.

    4. If custom firmware loads, debug where it fails (is it the same GPT init or something else)

    Regards,

    Karan

  • Hi Karan,

As suggested we added while loop in main function.

we booted the elf through sd card and connected the CCS. control was not in the while loop.

PFA. screen shot for control location.

if we do reset in ccs and run, it is hitting the while loop. PFB. Screen Shoot.

Please let us know, what to do next.

    Regards,

    Mallikarjun

  • Hi Mallikarjun,

If your image has the vectors and booting out of ATCM from A72 U-Boot, please ensure that R5 SPL doesn't load and boot the core (you can do so by simply renaming j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw in /lib/firmware) using the same image. This ensures that the R5 SPL shuts down the core, and when you are booting from U-Boot, you are booting the core from reset.

Also, note that when using CCS with a remote core that is booted by Linux, please only use the "Connect Target" and "Load Symbols" on the desired processor and ensure that no GEL scripts or anything runs of that sort (typical steps with an RTOS SDK environment). Stopping/reloading from CCS may also not work because you are disrupting the Linux driver state machine.

    regards

    Suman

  • Hi,

I was able to load your application as firmware from u-boot.

Why it doesn’t load from R5 SPL?

    • As you still use ATCM, ATCM is disabled in R5 SPL.

    Why it loads from u-boot?

    • U-boot has ATCM enabled, hence it loads.

Can the same application after modifying the linker file to NOT use ATCM load with both R5 SPL and u-boot?

    • No
    • Booting BTCM is possible only when ATCM is disabled.
    • If ATCM is enabled, we need to boot from ATCM
    • ^ this could be confusing but just wanted to give you an heads up that if you change linker file and then expect the firmware to load from u-boot (as it can boot now) that won’t be possible.

To speed up the process and avoid any miss-communication, I have prepared a short screen-capture video when I loaded your firmware from u-boot./cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/fw_5F00_load.7z

    Regards,
    Karan

  • Hi Karan,

Our initial understanding is that if we link our elf to j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw, during boot process u-boot will boot the elf.

but with the above replay, we understood that R5SPL will boot the MCU R5F0 if j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw is present.

hence we removed "j7-mcu-r5f0_0-fw" file and followed the steps in the short clip to boot MCU R5F0.

With this we are able to load MCU R5F0 and execute our elf through U-boot.

We debugged and found that issue is with gpt module which is causing the exception in the elf.

We removed gpt from the stack and tested the elf and it is working in both R5SPL boot and U-boot.

for R5FSPL boot we placed our reset vector at BTCM and for U-boot we placed it at ATCM.

    screen shot of U-boot loading.

    screen shot of R5SPL boot.

Thank you for the continues support.
