We have a custom board using AM65x booting Linux from eMMC and are planning to move it into manufacturing where the PCB will leave the fabrication site already programmed.

As such, we have been looking for ways to streamline the eMMC programming process at the manufacturing site. We have been utilizing SD cards as a boot medium to program the eMMC, but due to certain complexities with logistics, we'd like to move away from SD cards.

From what we've gathered, an ideal solution would be DFU either via USB or TFTP (something which is an selectable option in u-boot's menuconfig). What is the current support for DFU on AM65x?

In addition, are there other eMMC programming methods that TI can recommend? Ideally we'd like to perform the eMMC programming with as little media as possible, and all within u-boot.

Hi Eric,

SR2 hardware supports DFU. I am checking the software support internally & get back to you.
Other way is if you have SD interface then boot to u-boot and then use u-boot to copy images to eMMC.

Thanks for looking into DFU.

As I mentioned in the original post, we are trying to do eMMC programming without SD card, which is why DFU is being considered.

Are there any other TI recommended methods for eMMC programming?

Uniflash can be other option. I need to check if that is validated and functional with am65x.

USB Peripheral boot mode on J721E EVM (SPL-DFU boot mode)

The instructions should be similar for AM6.

Eric,

For DFU Boot: You need the below dip switch settings:

SW3: 0001000000
SW2: 0000000000

The micro-USB cable to should be connected to the daughter card for PCIe-USB - PROC067A.

Then follow the below instructions:

host$ sudo dfu-util -l

Found DFU: [0451:6163] ver=0224, devnum=52, cfg=1, intf=0, path="3-2", alt=1, name="u-boot.img", serial="UNKNOWN"
Found DFU: [0451:6163] ver=0224, devnum=52, cfg=1, intf=0, path="3-2", alt=0, name="tispl.bin", serial="UNKNOWN"

host$ sudo dfu-util -R -a tispl.bin -D tispl.bin
host$ sudo dfu-util -R  -a u-boot.img -D u-boot.img

And for Flashing eMMC using DFU:

Please note for flashing to eMMC you need to connect t micro-USB port which is right next to the console UART port.

You can boot to u-boot prompt & then:

From the target(AM65) u-boot terminal

setenv dfu_alt_info "tiboot3.bin raw 0x0 0x080000;tispl.bin raw 0x080000 0x200000;u-boot.img raw 0x280000 0x400000;u-boot-env raw 0x680000 0x020000;sysfw.itb raw 0x6c0000 0x100000;rootfs raw 0x800000 0x3800000"

dfu 1 mmc 0

sudo -E -S dfu-util -D $PATH_TO_BINARY/tiboot3.bin -a tiboot3.bin

sudo -E -S dfu-util -D $PATH_TO_BINARY/sysfw.itb -a sysfw.itb

sudo -E -S dfu-util -D $PATH_TO_BINARY/tispl.bin -a tispl.bin

sudo -E -S dfu-util -D $PATH_TO_BINARY/u-boot.img -a u-boot.img

Please resolve the issue.

Hi Keerthy,

I have successfully programmed u-boot into eMMC using above instructions as a guide, with differing steps. I deviated because I could not successfully program eMMC following exactly step by step.

Here is what I did:

We do not have USB0 connected on our board so I instead booted up u-boot using UART boot. Once inside u-boot, I set the dfu_alt_info to:

setenv dfu_alt_info ${dfu_alt_info_emmc}

I partitioned the eMMC as detailed here: software-dl.ti.com/.../Foundational_Components_U-Boot.html

Then I did dfu from the host side as per your instructions, calling out the correct alt #s as set by dfu_alt_info

Back on the board I ran:

=> mmc partconf 0 1 1 1

=> mmc bootbus 0 2 0 0

Then I set the bootmode pins to eMMC (with auto fall back to filesystem) and was able to get inside uboot.

I'm all set with uboot now, but I still have the Linux components left to program. It should be the same process, but I would like to know the recommended format for rootfs image and best way to make it. Can you provide details about the rootfs component?
