TDC1000-GASEVM: TDR Time of flight measurement with TDC1000

Part Number: TDC1000-GASEVM

I have been working on a project to design TDR based Soil Moisture measurement device. I have bought TDC1000-GASEVM for measurement of time of flight. I have configured all the settings on GUI but I am getting time of flight in microseconds but i am expecting TOF to be in nanoseconds as length of wire is only 1 metre. And i am not able to see any reflected pulse on DSO. So, now i am having doubts whether TDC1000 can be used for Time of flight measurement of Electromagnetic wave. So can TDC1000 be used for TDR measurement? Or there are other products from Texas Instrument for TDR time of flight measurement?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hello Nishant,

TDC1000 is not meant for time domain reflectometry. It is used for exciting ultrasonic transducers and just report the time it takes sound to travel in a medium and come back to the device. The TDC7200 is precise timer chip that can be used to find precise time between events. In the EVM, it finds precise time between start of echo and received echo for TDC1000.

Unfortunately I don't know of a device that does the complete TDR solution. However here is one app note which may help you think further: www.ti.com/.../slyt755.pdf

I will be closing this ticket.
