Trying to use CCS v3.3 unconnected

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAP3530

I have the CCS V3.3 full eval copy installed under Vista. After much trouble with it not launching at all (it would churn and churn and eventually quit)  I found I needed to set it to run as Administrator.  Ok, so that works now and it launchs. BUT, when it does, it reports that I have no target configured and I get the option to start CCS Setup or not.  Not, just quits.

The getting started guide says when I start CCS for the first time it has a default simulator configurator and I may change my configuration afterwards.  But that is not the case for me.  I have tried making somekind of simulator target in Setup, but that just makes CCS hangup looking for a simulator to be running.

Deeper down in the user guide, it seems I could set it to operate unconnected, but that would assume I can get it launched.  I cant.  I just want to be able to open the examples, and poke around and get up to speed, and write code at home.  Just run it as an IDE. I don't need a target for that.  The eventual real system will be in a clients office with an EVM  emulator, etc.

Is there some way to get this done?  Is this issue unique to the Eval license?

TIA

Dave

  • Dave,

CCS needs to be both "installed" and "run" as administrator. Additionally, for Vista there are a couple more requirements. Please refer to the following pages for info on running CCS on Vista:

    https://www-a.ti.com/downloads/sds_support/ReleaseNotes/CCSv3.3VistaKnownIssues.htm
    http://tiexpressdsp.com/wiki/index.php?title=Running_CCStudio_v3.3_on_Windows_Vista

Once the UAC is turned off and the issues mentioned in the above links are taken care of, you should be able to run CCS Setup, select a simulator configuration and start up CCS.

  • thanks,  I figured out the UAC and Winhelp stuff as well. I did not install as Administrator per se, but my login is administrator.  Do I need to uninstall and explicity log in as administrator and re-install?

CCS does start up but the one attempt I made at configuring a simulator (no thanks to help files)  caused CCS to look for that simulator to be running first.

So is the statement in the getting started doc  just plain wrong?  If so, can you recommend what settings i should use for the connection, processor, etc, etc, for the 'simulator' to make this thing happy?

My intended target is an OMAP3530 if that makes a difference.

This whole 'must connect to and initialize a targer' just to open a project is kind of restrictive and sure doesnt match the documentation.

  • Dave,

Are you tied to CCSv3.3?  The time limited free eval tool for CCSv3.3 is pretty old.  We have a beta of CCSv4 available.  It doesn't require you to connect on startup and it also has some support for linux aware debugging on OMAP3530.

  • Hi Dave,

Earlier version of CCS had a default simulator configuration (C6000 simulator), but that has since changed because of user feedback. Unfortunately the documentation has not been updated to reflect this change.

CCS v3.3 does support configurations for OMAP3530 but that may have been intoduced with one of the CCS 3.3 service packs. I'm not sure if it is available with the Eval tools.

In any case if you have a HW configuration, you should be able to launch CCS even if you don't physically have the target. You will get an error dialog indicating that the target was unable to be initialized but you can hit 'Ignore' and that will bring up the IDE in a disconnect state and you will be able to open and build projects.

    Hope this helps,

    ki

  • John,

I might be tied to v3.3.  Not sure really.  Trying to figure out all this and the framework tools, and Matlab integration all at once.  Not using codec engine since ARM side is Threadex. Trying to just use  DSP Link and FC in minimal configuration.  Much of that out of my hands.  What are compatibility issues for DSP/BIOS, etc  and v4?  Also not sure about Matlab code generator issue.  I think they specify v3.3.

    Ki-Soo,

Are there other un-updated docs I need to know about?

I think I tried the IGNORE at one point and it just hung up, but I might have launched it from CC Setup. I almost might have an invalid HW conifg. I don't have one from the target board. Although I do need that. I don't have it yet.

Can you forward some dummy minimum config?

    thanks

  • CCS ships with a bunch of default configurations. You should be able to use one of those. There must be some issue with your install since you state that you are unable to bring up CCS when configuring for a simulator target. You should be able to bring up a simulator without an issue. Which simulator target have you tried with the Eval version?

  • I don't have access to the system right now and don't remember the names. But I think there were a couple of simulator (or at least looked like that based on the name) factory boards configs in CC Setup. Near top of the list. I picked one of those.  and I think it said I was missing drivers when I tried to run.  Then later I tried making a custom board selecting one of the simulators and one of the supported processors. I think that one hung after i hit ignore.  I need to try it all again. I know, very vague.

Would you suggest re-installing everything? Maybe there was some issue I missed because of UAC durign the install?

  • A re-install might help. Try installing CCS while logged in as an administrator. Usually you have to have admin privileges to properly install CCS. In the meantime I will try to get more information on the eval versions, as I have not used the eval version in some time.

  • OK. I'll give it a try later.  We will have a paid license on the dev system in the lab. I just thought an eval in the meantime would be convenient.

If you can point me to a specific configuration in CC setup that you know should work, please do.

    thanks

  • Matlab integration with CCSv4 is not complete yet.  We are working with the MathWorks on it but it is not ready.

As far as BIOS compatibility, CCSv4 comes with 2 versions of BIOS.  5.40 and 6.x.  5.40 is meant to be binary compatible with BIOS 5.3 and the changes are limited to the host side, specifically getting tools like the runtime object viewer to work (v4 equivalent of KOV).  BIOS 6.x is a brand new version of BIOS with a new API (although it does have a compatibility mode).  We expect most people to use BIOS 5.40 in CCSv4 with the transition to BIOS 6 being longer term as newer devices come out.

  • thanks John.  I think I'll stick with v3.3 then.

Update. I have CCS launching now.  yea

Deinstalled everything.  UAC off. Admin privelages.  Re-installed. Set CC Setup and CCS to run as Admin. Selected C64+ simulator.  Launched CCS and voila, working as advertised.

My original install must have been bad. ??

Although this time around it did tell me I need ActiveState perl 5.8 for some scripting.  I assume I can find that download somewhere but haven't tried yet.

thanks for everyones help. Its appreciated.

    Dave

  • Dave,

You only need ActiveState Perl if you are planning on automating actions in CCS using Perl.  If not then don't worry about it.

    John

  • Dave,

Thanks for the update. That is good to hear that you are up and running. Perhaps it was not installing as admin that was the issue.

Regarding the scripting message pop-up - that is only a concern if you plan on using CCScripting. See this link for more information: http://tiexpressdsp.com/index.php?title=CCS_3.3#Installation

    Thanks
