TIDA-010042: Uprating for 50A output

Part Number: TIDA-010042

Hello

I'm looking to base a solar charger design on your TIDA-010042 reference that needs a 50A charger output. I see in the data that it's possible to uprate to 40A by adjusting the MOSFETs, and I assume to 50A in the same way. One thing that concerns me is that there is no mention of inductors L6 & L7 in the reference design needing to be uprated. The ones specified are 30A and at the values shown there is nothing available that can handle 40A or 50A.

Can you tell me:

a. Do these inductors need to be changed for higher charger current?

b. How are the values of these calculated? Can a lower inductance be used with other adjustments?

thank you

  • Hi Karl,

The inductors used in the design are 30A rated. Since it is an interleaved design, per phase current will be only half the total current. therefore, to increase the current to 40A, there is no need to change the inductors. However, for 50A current (per phase current of 25A), 30A rated inductors are marginal. It may be better to increase the inductor rating to 35A or more.

With increasing current, the inductance will reduce. You can use the standard buck power stage design equations. You can also use Power Stage DesignerTM tool available on ti.com.

  • Thanks Salil, that's very helpful. I think I need to modify for a buck/boost type operation too so I will use the tool to see where I get to.

One note - the download for the tool is a bit broken. I get a page not found as the URL is badly formed. I managed to adjust it to make it work though.
