TRF7970A: ISO18000-3 Mode3 support

Hello,

The datasheet for the TRF7970A states that it supports ISO 18000-3, however there I can find almost nothing regarding this standard in the documentation for TRF7970A.

We would like to be able to read/write the NXP ICode ILT-M tags, which use ISO 18000-3 Mode 3. We have had no success so far using the TRF7970 EVM Control GUI; we can succesfully read the UID on some 14443A tags, but the 18000-3 tags do not show up.

Is ISO 18000-3 Mode 3 not natively supported in the firmware?

Hello Anders,

Trying using ISO15693. ISO18000-3 is used in conjunction with ISO15693.

Thanks for your reply. We've also tried ISO15693 with no luck, unfortunately.

Also, I thought ISO15693 was the same as ISO18000-3 Mode 1? The tags we wish to use are ISO18000-3 Mode 3. But I'm honestly not sure what the difference between Mode 1 and Mode 3 is?

Hello Anders,

Thanks for mentioning that, I looked up the details for the device and we support Mode 1 only. Not Mode 3. The reason for this is that Mode 2 and Mode 3 specifications came out after the first TRF79xx device was released, and support was not added to later versions. So the only means to talk with the tag would be to use Direct Mode 0 which is not trivial and we don't really support beyond a simple how to get started spiel.

Hello Ralph,

Alright, that's a shame - thanks for your reply. That certainly explains the lack of success we've had so far.

To use Direct Mode 0, we would need to alter the firmware, correct? Or could we manage just sending (and parsing) the raw commands from the PC to the COM port?

Hello Anders,

You need to alter the firmware massively. You basically have to decode the raw carrier data via firmware, including having your MCU run at 13.56MHz to able to run the decoding processes to pull out the data bits from the raw carrier.
