TRPGR30ATGC: Achievable range following SCBA031 application report

Part Number: TRPGR30ATGC

Hello,

We are switching our application from FDXB to HDX to get a better reading range.

We plan to use a TRPGR30ATGC 12mm glass tag and we will design a board following TI's SCBA031 application report in order to maximize the RF field.

By doing so, what would be the maximum practical range we could get in front of the antenna, the tag being correctly aligned? what would be the best reader antenna size for this application?

Second question: does TI or its business partners sell the tag with a syringe for animal injection?

Thanks in advance,

Victor

  • Hello Victor,

    I do not have any values for a reading range for this setup. I have checked the range with a setup that uses also a full-bridge driver for the antenna which is supplied with 5V. The connected antenna has a diameter of 8cm and with that setup I can achieve 12cm reading range. With a bigger antenna and a higher driver voltage it should be possible to achieve a range well beyond the 20cm.

    I know that the reading range for the  TRPGR30ATGC 12mm transponder was seen with our high power reader and a gate antenna in the 50cm range.

    At the end the maximum antenna size depends on your application.

    Regarding the availability of the tag for animal injection, TI is not selling the tags with syringe but, from my knowledge, the companies Oregon RFID and Biomark are selling our 12mm HDX transponders in that form.

  • Hi Helfried,

    I'm working with Victor on the same project.

    thank you very much for your answer.

    We're missing another piece of information: Are there any recommendations on the target Q of the antenna we should design against?

    Or, if we look at the problem from a different perspective, what parameters should we try to maximize when designing the antenna rensonnant circuit:

    * Peak to peak voltage?

    * Q factor?

    Are there any limits to the peak voltage we apply to the antenna (we're used to reaching more than 400Vpp and several amps of coil current, but all application I can find in SCBA031 barely mention anything higher than 80Vpp and hundreds of milliAmps of coil current).

    Thank you for your help :)

  • Hello Ibrahim,

    regarding your request I can only point you to two documents which are related to our high power readers which are no more sold by TI but may contain useful information for you.

    S2000 Reader Reference Guide:

    RI-RFM-007BrefGuide.pdf

    and the S2000 LF Antenna Design Guide:

    2577.3107.7723.11-06-21-068_LF Antenna Design.pdf

    Hope these documents can give you a little help for your design.

    Best regards,
