LM2901-Q1: Does the component have overload protection?

Part Number: LM2901-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM2902-Q1, , LM2901, LM2902

Hello TI Team,

We use the component for voltage regulation of a power supply.

I would like to know if the device has a over-load protection like hiccup or latch protection.

Best regards,

Manuel Heine

  • As shown in the absolute maximum ratings, the output can withstand a short circuit to ground, but not to VCC.

This device works as a plain amplifier. If you want your power supply to have hiccup/latch features, you have to implement them yourself.

  • Hello Manuel,

    Is this a LM2901-Q1 or LM2902-Q1?

The LM2901 is a quad comparator, and the LM2902 is the quad op-amp cousin.

The LM2901 output will limit sinking current to about 12-16mA.

If you short the output to V+, then it will dissipate 10's to 100's of mW, which will cause it to overheat and eventually destroy itself...

As Clemens said, these are simple devices and do not have any advanced protections. External protections are required.
