OPA810: power supply selection

Part Number: OPA810
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65133,

Q1:

Is there any requirement for selection power supply for this OP?

such as accuracy 5% or 1%, PSRR? load regulation?

Q2:

If use +/5V for this OP, should I use power supply like TPS65133?

Or should I use two seprate power supply, such 5V LDO for OP + ADC, and another -5V DC/DC for OP only?

Q3:

I would like to if it's necessary to use DC/DC to generate -6V, and then add LDO for -5V to have better peformance.

  • Hi Liping,

There are no official power supply selection requirements for the OPA810. Accuracy of 5% will likely not be a huge concern if working with supplies in the +/- 5V range. The overall performance of the supplies will depend on the circuit components being used and therefore ideally better performing components is recommended but we do not require any sort of threshold for them to work with our amplifiers. Consider the max supply current a potential candidate has and maybe give yourself some margin from the max output current your application requires, but other than that most LDO and DC/DC converters are designed to work for these purposes.

As for your other two questions, there are some benefits and drawbacks to selecting the appropriate design which all depend on your application and design constraints. DC/DC converters like the one you highlighted are a good option as they can offer dual supplies in one solution and are more efficient than LDOs, however they tend to be more expensive and introduce more noise to the design. An LDO tends to be cheaper than most DC/DC converters and introduce less noise, however they are not as efficient.

I strongly recommend opening a separate thread and highlight the potential options you are considering with the parts you mentioned, and the appropriate team can advise you on the best option and maybe highlight alternative parts you have not considered that might work better for your application.

    Best Regards,

    Ignacio
