LM13700: Burst noise is generated.

Hi team,

We have confirmed that only one channel of this product generates burst noise.
I assume it is a component-specific problem, but is there any possibility of such an occurrence?
Also, have you ever confirmed such an occurrence in the market?

Do you have an oscilloscope image of what this burst noise looks like? How is the device configured?

Hello Ryu,

Burst noise in bipolar process usually occurs due to an imperfection in a silicon wafer. All wafers are imperfect. If this imperfection shows up in the active area of a transistor in the input stage, then that amplifier could show burst noise. This occurrence should be rare and only affect one channel.

Noise tests are expensive. Catching burst noise is even more expensive because you have to wait for it to happen.

What percentage of samples have excessive noise? How many samples do you consume in production? How much extra would you pay for screened noise devices? I'll forward this this information to the decision makers.

In the over 20 years that I have supported this amplifier, I think this (burst noise) has been reported twice (including this time).
