PCM5242: soft mute vs digital volume control

Part Number: PCM5242

I'm trying to decide if my project requires the xsmt pin connection for mcu control, or if I don't need it. What's the difference between xsmt (8.5) and the digital volume control mute (8.7.3).

I suspect it has to do with power up and power down (10.2.1). Can I perform a similar power down using the digital mute, or is the xsmt the better way to do it?

I don't want pops during shut down...

  • Hi Jay,

Functionally, they are the same. The difference is that the XSMT can be controlled at a hardware level rather than digitally. In the datasheet we also describe a configuration where you use a voltage divider on the supply so that if an unexpected power collapse occurs the device will mute gracefully. I think if possible you should at least use the XSMT in the voltage supervisor configuration.

    Thanks!
