CDCM61002: Phase Noise at 125MHz and Crystal Power

Part Number: CDCM61002

We are considering use of the CDCM61002 Clock Generator in our design.  I have two questions that I hope you can quickly help me with:

 1)      The LVDS phase noise numbers in the datasheet (page 5) are at 625 MHz.  Can you get me phase noise numbers for an LVDS output of 125 MHz?

2)      I am having a little difficulty finding a suitable crystal to pair with this part.  There are three specific options listed in the datasheet, but those parts are all difficult to obtain or obsolete.  Perhaps because the latest datasheet is from 2011.  The minimum drive level for the Crystal Characteristics is specified at 0.1 mW or 100 uW (table on page 7 of the datasheet).  Many crystals I am looking at have a drive level of around 10 uW and might have a maximum drive level of 100 uW.  I am nervous about selecting a crystal with a maximum drive that meets the minimum of the CDCM61002.

-Is there an updated list of recommended crystals?  Or perhaps a reference design?

-Is the minimum drive level for the CDCM61002 really 100 uW? What will be the consequences if I select a crystal with a drive power less than 100 uW?

  • Thanks for posting on E2E. I have assigned your post to the responsible engineer. He will respond to you soon.

  • Hi Howard,

I'm afraid we don't have phase noise plots other than the ones available in the datasheet. As for the drive level, you can add a series resistor if the drive level is too high, because normally crystal's max drive level is 100uW or 200uW max. I've never seen any crystal with 1mW max drive level.

You can refer to this appnote for some information on crystal. It's for another part and not published yet but it has some basic background introduction. SNAA331.pdf
