DP83822I: pin assignment, when connecting magnetic (HX1198 or 7490100111A)

Part Number: DP83822I

Hello,

I am using DP83822 in an application together with HX1198.
In the datasheet of HX1198 there is the following pin description mentioned:

I connected the signals 1,3 and 6,8 to the RJ45 connector, the pins 16, 14 and 11, 9 to the Ethernet PHY.

When looking at the whole thing in layout, I see, that the routing is not ideal.
I have to around the magnetic pins to have the right order of the signals.

Now my questions:
1) Can I mirror the pin assignment at the magnetic in that way, that I put

TD+ no more on 1, but on 8.
TD- no more on 3, but on 6.
RD+ no more on 6, but on 3.
RD- nor more on 8, but on 1.

Of course I would change at the other side the according signals, too.

2) Is it decisive, on which side the signals to the RJ45 connector are connected?
In other words:
Does it make a difference, if the signals to the RJ45 connector are connected to 1-8 or 9-16?

3) The circuit of the Wuerth 7490100111A looks similar, but the common mode choke is at the other side compared to HX1198. Does it matter, on which side the common mode choke is placed (RJ45 or Ethernet PHY)?

4) If the signals are changed at Ethernet PHY DP83822I, is this recognized automatically, or does it have to be configured?

Thanks in advance,

Helmut

  • Hi Helmut,

Kindly refer to auto-mdix and polarity detection/correction section of datasheet. I think using mdix and polarity detection/correction feature should help you be with required signal swapping.

Regarding CMC, we have seen customers using both type of magnetics (CMC on device side and CMC on cable side).
