How to modify the parameters of IWR1642 to make the maximum detection range above 150m?

I have searched for information about the maximum detection distance of IWR1642 and found that the maximum detection distance can reach 185m. The following figure is

I checked the profile of the IWR1642 chip, the long distance profile, but the maximum distance is not more than 150m. The following figure shows the file content

What parameters should I modify in this file to make the maximum detection range exceed 150m? What is the formula for calculating the maximum detection distance?

We would recommend getting an understanding of following :

1. FMCW basics -> to understand what parameters affect the Range (Max distance)

2. Antenna gain and Tx power --> Max distance at which signals can faithfully reflect from

3. Use #1, #2 in FMCW equations OR use the Estimator tool to calculate reachable distance

4. Use the parameters calculated in #3 to configure simple demo examples like OOB demo to see result of reflection

However, I still have some questions that I would like to ask for your help. I found the formula for calculating the maximum distance, as follows

1.In the first formula, decreasing the value of S increases the maximum range. But I don't see how S is retrieved or set.

2.From formula 2, it can be seen that increasing TX Gain and RX Gain or decreasing the minimum SNR can make SNR larger.

But normally as the gain gets bigger, the maximum range gets bigger. Is there a correlation between SNR and maximum range?

Does SNR get bigger and the maximum range gets bigger, or does SNR get bigger and the maximum range gets smaller, or is there no correlation?

3.What parameters can be configured to increase the gain? Or is the gain of IWR1642 not changeable, can only consider cascade mode to increase?

Hi,

1) The value of S comes from the frequency slope of the chirp profile:

This value is set in the profileCfg configuration command, and is the value of <freqSlopeConst>. Please see page 21 of the SDK User's Guide for more information on this parameter.

2) As Range increases, SNR decreases, as indicated by the equation

3) To increase the RX gain, you can set the <rxGain> value in the profileCfg configuration command. Please see page 22 of the SDK User's Guide.

I still have some questions about the use of mmWave Sensing Estimator.

[1] <Detection SNR> parameter in <Additional Parameters> can be set in chip configuration Parameters? Because reducing this value, the maximum detection range will be greatly increased.Like this

[2] Are TX Gain and Rx Gain in <Board Specific Parameters> unchanged for IWR1642 with a single chip? For example, the EVM gain of TI is 8db. Increasing the parameter value here will also increase the maximum detection range.Like this

[3] What is the difference between <Maximum Detectable Range> and <Max Range for Typical Detectable Object>? Which one shall prevail? In addition, the smaller the <Velocity Resolution>, will one target be detected into two targets?

Hi ctc,

Detection SNR is an additional parameter, meaning it is an input to build in engineering margin into the design. It is not a user-set parameter.

TX gain is not a profile configuration you can set, it is used in other calculations which is why it is included on the sensing estimator
RX gain is adjustable via the chirp configuration. Please see page 22 of the SDK User's Guide.

maximum detectable range:
- Maximum range where objects are still detectable by the chirp design. Maximum range increase memory requirements and must be balanced against other Scene Parameters
Max range for typical detectable object:
- maximum range where the Typical Detectable Object will still be detected

Maximum detectable range is something you set, while the max range for typical detectable object is what the calcualted result of the chirp design is. This output provides the guideline for maximum range of detection for Typical Detectable Object.

velocity resolution:
- Smallest difference in velocity of two objects to detect both objects individually with velocity only. Smaller velocity resolution will impact Min # of Chirp Loops and reduce maximum Measurement Rate
- A smaller velocity resolution just means that you can detect two objects moving with velocity at a very high accuracy if their velocities have a small difference.
