TMS320F28379D: Error connecting to the target using CCS 7.3.0.00019 and XDS100V2

Part Number: TMS320F28379D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28335

Hello everyone. I tried several configurations but could not connect to the target. Can anyone identify the possible errors I may have made in the control board configuration. Thanks!

  • Hi Weder,
Are you read USER’S GUIDE(F2837xD-FRM-EX-UG-210), Getting Started and Troubleshooting section ?

  • Hi Weder,

Could you also double check your settings for A:SW1 & SW1?  I'm not sure that the image on page 7 of your attachment matches with your notes in the 'Key position' section.  It may just be that the image is a bit too dark for me to make out the switch positions though.

Outside of this, it looks like things are correct.  I'd be curious of your comments on the above.

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi hossein khaligh

I read ”F2837xD_DEV_USER_GUIDE.pdf” {F2837xD Firmware Development Package User’s Guide, section 2 (Getting Started and Troubleshooting)} that I believe to be the same document you cited.

     I used “Control Card F28379D sprui76.pdf” {Delfino TMS320F28379D controlCARD R1.3 User's Guide}

     I also read:

     XDS100 page : http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/XDS100

Target Configuration - Custom Configurations - Texas Instruments Wiki.pdf :

without success so far. Thanks for the tip!

  • Hi Brett,

In the "Key position" section I wrote "SW1 => Position 1: OFF (up); Position 2: ON (down)" - (Wait Boot Mode).
In fact, according to the figure, the correct description is: "SW1 => Position 1: OFF (up); Position 2: OFF (up). (Get Mode).

However, both Startup Mode Switches had already been tested and the connection failed.

    Thank you,
    Weder.
  • Hi Weder,

My comment was more around A:SW1.  Looking at the PDF again (with a different viewer), it does appear you've got it correct.

    ===

Can you confirm that you've not ever been able to connect up to this controlCARD?

    ===

What do you see on TP2 (a test point pad) using an oscilloscope when the following is done?

    • F2837xD device in Get Mode (configured via SW1)
    • On-card emulator disabled (A:SW1's leftmost switch as OFF)

You should see the reset signal (XRSn) go high for the majority of the time, but then pulse low occasionally (indicating a watchdog reset in an unprogrammed device, where the watchdog hasn't been disabled).  What do you see?

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

I bought this controlCARD exactly two months ago and I have never been able to connect it up.

I have been used TMS320F28335 for three years, another C2000 MCU. Even having some

experience, I am having problems in the connecting process of the controlCARD.

I verified the voltage signals on TP2 and others TP. For TP2, I confirm a signal of 14.7 ms - 68 Hz

(XRSn) that goes high the majority of the time and low during a very short time, as you have commented.

This result for SW1 as Get Mode and on-card emulator disable (A:SW1's leftmost switch as OFF).

    Thank you,

    Weder.

  • Hi Weder,

I can tell you have some experience, the PDF you sent in your origin thread utilizes features that a beginner wouldn't start to utilize at this point :).  The PDF also happened to knock out all the common missteps when dealing with this kit.

The XRSn behavior you're seeing proves that the device is working as one should following power up.  The xds100v2 driver looks like it's getting utilized correctly too.  As a result, this looks like some very minor problem between the on-board xds100v2 chip and the C2000 device.

I'm beginning to suspect this may be a HW issue.  However, before making that conclusion, I'd like to investigate two other areas though:

    1. Once you get the cCARD switches back in the right place, can you try reprogramming the FTDI chip using the .bat file found at the following link.  I don't think this is the issue - however, it's easy to rule out.
      https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/c2000/f/171/p/252873/889381#889381

    2. Could you flip A:SW1 back and forth about 10 times - perhaps some dust or particles have gotten stuck in the switch.  This fits the evidence you're stating, but isn't very likely.

Let me know how this works out.  If we need to go down the path of getting a replacement, we can.

    Hopefully this helps!

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

    I did the steps 1 and 2.

I reprogrammed the FTDI chip as you have suggested.

    Unfortunally, it did not work.

Do you have more suggestions to solve the problem?

I noticed that there may be a problem. See these figures.

Can you explain why this ocurr?

    Thank you

    Weder.

  • Hi Weder,

I'll have someone look at the target configuration weirdness, perhaps it's related to your issue.

I thought of one other thing this morning:  When you have your USB cable plugged in the the emulator portion of the cCARD, what do you see on A:D4 & A:D3?  Are they constant on?  Blinking?  Or off?   If constant on, you may want to try changing the USB ports you are using.  If mostly off, this won't be the root cause for what you're seeing.

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett

Both remain turned off during all time., A:D2 and A:D3.

Just giving you more information, I installed ccsv7 in another computer for test. The problem ocurr again with the same error mesage.

I also reintalled ccsv7 in the first computer but nothing changed.

I believe we have exhausted the connection tests. Theoretically, making the connection is a very simple process!

However, I am receptive to new tests.

    Thank you

    Weder.

  • Weder

Make sure your target config is set as "active" or as "default". Right click on it in your project explorer and select one of those options.

    Best regards
    Chris
  • Hi Chris,

After a post, I identified this situation. I was restarting a project as an alternative to establish the connection but had not completed the configuration.

    Thank you

    Weder.

  • Hi Weder,

Thanks for your patience as we went through this process of debugging.  I'm sorry for the issues you've run into with this board.

I feel the board is likely defective and a replacement should be provided.  I would recommend contacting the TI eSTORE (or the distributor who sold you this kit) and ask for a replacement.  You can reference this e2e thread to assist in justification.

Let us know how this goes.

For the distributor: this would be one that the TI C2000 team would like to take a look at.

    Thank you,
    Brett
