MSP-FET: MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device

Part Number: MSP-FET
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGIA

I've been trying trying to program MSP430 using MSP-FET but everytime I try to program, I get an error message that says 'MSP430: Error connecting to the target: Unknown device'. I have connected a wire with bug strip on one side and with JTAG on the other side that gets connected to the JTAG port on the circuit board.

Did not see this issue earlier but suddenly this error has started to show up. There is no change in the hardware so do not anticipate any issue on the HW side. I have tried programming on multiple boards but no luck. I would like to add, I have on an onboard power supply in the form of Li-Ion battery and there is power LED that starts blinking when I try to program. If I remember correctly, earlier when the programming worked the power LED remained solid the entire time. Not sure if blinking LED is some of indication here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • It seems that the MSP-FET is recognized. But the MSP430 is not.

Can you test the JTAG signal to check whether the program signal exist.

  • HI Eason, Thanks for the reply. I tried doing a test connection in CCS but unfortunately this option is disabled and greyed out for me. Is it because of the MSP430xxx that I am currently using? Can you suggest me the some other way to check the JTAG signal? Also I would like to give you an update that I tried running a simple LED toggle program on Energia and it showed me the same error of Target not being found. So that rules out any configuration issues with CCS.

  • You just need to connect to the program pin using oscilloscope to check whether signal will changes. Remember 2 PIN JTAG and 4 PIN JTAG is different.

  • After having connected to the scope, we realized that the data stops capturing intermittently after every few seconds. As you rightly said earlier, it was an issue with the UART connectivity. After having changed the wire it works fine. Thanks very much for your help. Appreciate it!
