MSP430FR6047: Serial Data is not on the terminal

Dear Dylan,

Thank for the guidance, I tried to monitor the TXD pin with an USB to serial devices, but still there is not data on the port.

Is that possible that the firmware is not running and it is locked in a loop (while(1)) or something? Would you please let me know how we can make sure it is running?

As an update, I noticed the code is locked here:

 code = USS_startLowPowerUltrasonicCapture(&gUssSWConfig);

The code reaches to line 164, but it can not each to line 166, so it means it is locked in 165.

Yes I believe that the reason you are stuck inside of that function is due to the error.

Have you made any changes to the code since you imported it from the SDK? You may want to try rolling back any changes you have made.

If not, can you read through this thread to see if any of Johnson's suggestions help you?

I used even the untouched firmware and it has this error. 

Regarding this thread I did it step by step but apparently there is an error still in HSPLL.

Would you please let me know what can I do more to fix this error for HSPLL?

I did some measurements on USS 8MHz crystal:

What i see on the USSXOUT pin is as follows (I just connected my oscilloscope  probe to this pin, I do not know if this is a correct way of measuring this):

Here I see almost 1 second between pulses, but when when I zoom in, inside each pulse there is two pules as follows (period= 19.6ms):

Should not this be 8MHz?

Regarding the second crystal (HFX):

I noticed it assembly part is not completed:

We are missing C15, C16, R26, Would you please let me know if we need this part for having working system?

Hi Behnam,

I would agree that the output from the USSXT looks wrong. Is it possible that the crystal has been damaged in some way? You may want to try replacing the crystal. If you haven't changed the software at all then the startup sequence should be fine so it seems like a hardware problem.

As for your second question about HFXT/ Y1, it is not necessary for the demo project. In our BOM associated with the EVM you will notice that those components are marked as do not populate, and the demo code does not use them.

As long as you are able to make a good connection with the pins, I would expect the crystal oscillator output to be an 8MHz sine wave once it has started up. Measuring it would have some effect on the crystal but I would not expect it to completely ruin its behavior.

What's the bandwidth of your oscilloscope? Your screenshots mention 3kHz and 6kHz which would be much too slow to measure the signals you're trying to probe.

Based on the datasheet it is mentioned that this Ceramic Resonator has built in capacitor , so it means we should not put more capacitors externally?

Behnam,

During internal testing, we found that the additional capacitance applied to the crystal was necessary for good accuracy on the crystal. This should be documented somewhere, but it appears that it is not. Please just note that we intentionally add those capacitors despite their datasheet's recommendations, and that all EVM430FR6047's do include those extra caps. They are not the source of the problem. 

As for Seth's good point about the oscilloscope bandwidth, on the USSXT shot, it still says under 8MHz sampling rate. You need more than 16MHz sampling to reliably sample the signal, and ideally higher than that to get a better idea of the shape of the signal. 

To me it still appears that your crystal is not functioning correctly but another test could be to check with an oscilloscope with a higher sampling rate.

I actually I could measure a 2 mV@10MHz signal that I made with a signal generator, and I could easily see it with the same setting that I had for the measurement of the USSXOUT signal, so it seems that the measurements are valid. (For this these tests I used 1X prob). 

Now, I do not know how to proceed, would you please let me know what could be the solutions and then I work on them and I will update you as soon as I implement the tests.
