CCS/BOOST-DRV8711: Install trouble based on DRV8711 + MSP430-EXP430G2ET

Part Number: BOOST-DRV8711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8711,

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

trying to get a the DRV8711 + MSP430-EXP430G2ET running first time.

Motor and power supply connected

set up the Hardware/Software as advised in User's Guide SLVU967–May 2014.

The Gui is running and seems connected with the DRV8711 Controller. But the Software Buttons are not working .

Another indication for dysfunction is the emty Firmware Version window and and full scale current widow.

Can you help me to get it run , any clue ?

  • Hey Matthias,

I'm not very familiar with this EVM but have you gone through the getting started section in the User's Guide? www.ti.com/.../slvu967.pdf

Specifically, section 3.2.1 on setting up the launchpad jumpers. It appears this GUI uses the HW UART so UART jumpers on J3 need to be rotated horizontally.

    Thanks,
    JD
  • Hey Matthias,

Were you able to get the launchpad communicating with the GUI?

    Thanks,
    JD
  • unfortunattelly not. Is there anything i can check ?

i can imagine that an unequal baudrate setting launchpad <> DRV8711 can causes a miscommunication, would you agree ? if yes how can i set baudrate of DRV8711 ?

    thanks

  • Hey Matthias,

I feel like the issue is between the launchpad and PC, not the launchpad and the booster pack. It seems to me like it's not connecting to the GUI.

Did you flash in the Demo Firmware into the MSP430?

I don't have this EVM/booster pack, but I do have just the launchpad. I'll try to see if I can install the GUI sometime tomorrow and get it to talk with the launchpad and no boosterpack.

    Thanks,
    JD
  • any new ? were you able to get the GUI run propper ?

  • Hey Matthias,

Unfortunately, I was unable to get this GUI to run on my machine to try and debug on my side.  I'm going to reach out to the DRV team as one of them should have it running.

In the mean time, Can you please confirm these things from your side:

    1. Have You successfully programmed the BOOST-DRV8711_FIRMWARE into the MSP430 Launchpad?

    2. Can you confirm the jumper settings match the DRV8711 EVM User's guide?

    Thanks,

    JD

  • Hi Matthias,

    Can you answer JD's questions:

    1. Have You successfully programmed the BOOST-DRV8711_FIRMWARE into the MSP430 Launchpad?

    2. Can you confirm the jumper settings match the DRV8711 EVM User's guide?

Assuming 1 and 2 are yes, have you confirmed the COM Port is correct? There have been cases where the GUI connects to the wrong COM Port.
  • yes , i did all of this. my board is an MSP430G2ET.

serial monitor shows no interaction with the board until i deactivated the fifo button in windows com config.

No the Gui works but extremly slow.

  • Hi Matthias,

Thank you for the response. Now that you have the GUI working, can you clarify "works but extremely slowly"?

If you issue a command on the GUI like nSLEEP, how long does it take to implement?

What version of Windows are you using?
How did you deactivate the fifo?
