BQ76930: Questions: single part to support 4-6 cells and active balance question

Part Number: BQ76930

Hi Matt,

1.  We are working on a product with two SKUs, one for 4 cells and one for 6 cells.  It would be nice to have one PCB that can be selectable (maybe using jumpers) for 4-cell or 6-cell.  As I understand it, BQ7692x can only do up to 5 cells, and the BQ7693x can only do minimum of 6 cells.  But I just wanted to check in case there might be a way to accomplish the goal of using only the BQ7693x device for either 4 cell or 6 cell operation.

2.  We need to cell balance ~300mA and this is getting quite high for passive balancing.  I was wondering if you have any material on how to use active cell balancing with the BQ769x devices.  I was thinking to use a boost converter for each cell that is enabled by the BQ769x VCx pins (when they are shorted for passive balancing).  The boost converter would be operating in continuous conduction mode and its output would be connected to the top of the battery pack with a schottkey diode  I have simulated such a circuit in LTSpice and I think it would work but I haven't found a lot of other people doing it this way so I wanted to get your feedback.

Thank you,

Erik
