TDA4VM: TDA4VM: Performance number of EthFW client running on MCU2_1

Hi Stanley,

As per the previous discussion e2e.ti.com/.../tda4vm-performance-number-of-ethfw-client-running-on-mcu2_1, We took the udp_iperf.c  file from 8.2 to 8.1 and also we have applied the optimization flags like "OPTIMIZATION=PERFORMANCE" and "enabled the thumb2 mode (CFLAGS_INTERNAL += -mthumb)" to the Enet LLD lwip example application from PDK, but we could not able to see any improvement in the UDP iperf RX performance it's still showing around 23Mbps on 8.1 version.

But in 8.2 version the same example, we could able to see the 105Mbps with applying the optimization flags. We compared the example present in both 8.2 and 8.1, we saw two differences, one is udp_iperf.c file and another one this flag (-DLWIPIF_APP_RX_PKT_HANDLING). We have taken these two changes, after considering these changes in 8.1 version, still we could not able to see any improvement in the UDP iperf RX performance.

NOTE: The flag (DLWIPIF_APP_RX_PKT_HANDLING) available in the makefile present in ~/ti/drv/enet/enet_component.mk

Also we compared the memory map, MPU configuration(cacheable and non-cacheable) and we printed the CFLAGS, LDFLAGS all these are same and we are using same compiler(ti-cgt-armllvm_1.3.0.LTS) in both version, still why we are not able to see the improvement?

Can you let me know, Is there any other difference in between 8.2 and 8.1?

Can you try to change below parameters along with udp_iperf.c file changes and optimization flags.

lwipopts.h file from "pdk_jacinto_08_01_00_36\packages\ti\transport\lwip\lwip-port\freertos\include\" as well as "pdk_jacinto_08_01_00_36\packages\ti\transport\lwip\lwip-port\tortos\include\" 

- #define MEMP_NUM_NETBUF         2

+ #define MEMP_NUM_NETBUF         64

- #define DEFAULT_UDP_RECVMBOX_SIZE (MEMP_NUM_TCP_SEG)

+ #define DEFAULT_UDP_RECVMBOX_SIZE 320

Could you rebuild the PDK with above changes and try to test performance once.

Thanks for the response.

I have tried the changes mentioned by you along with udp_iperf.c file changes and optimization flags on 8.1 SDK version. Now I could able to see the improvement in the UDP iperf RX performance around 105Mbps on EVM using 8.1 SDK version. As compared to previous(23 Mbps) now I could able to see some good numbers(105Mbps) on UDP RX.

Can I get to know, How much you are able to see the UDP RX from your side?

1) Can I get your binary the one which you are seeing 110Mbps on EVM?

2) On EVM, In which core you verified the UDP iperf RX and which interface you used like CPSW2G or CPSW9G because I was seeing 105Mbps on MCU1_0 core side using CPSW2G RGMII interface on EVM.

Hi Sesha,

I am running with lwip example application as mentioned PDK UserGuide.

I ran UDP iperf with one of CPSW9G interface in RGMII 1G link on MCU2_0.

When I am run iperf with limited bandwidth option only, getting good throughput means 100Mbps+.
(example command: iperf -c <ip> -i 1 -t 5 -r -u -b 150M) 

you can also try to limit bandwidth from iperf and verify if there is any performance improvement.

Now I could able to see the UDP iperf RX performance around 120Mbps after running the iperf command like this (command: iperf -c <ip> -u -b 120M -t 10).

Previously also I gave same command (command: iperf -c <ip> -u -b 100M -t 10), but I gave the bandwidth 100M that's why we are seeing UDP RX 105Mbps, After changing bandwidth from 100M to 120M, I could able to see the improvement in the UDP RX.

But if I am giving bandwidth more than 120M, somehow the UDP RX gradually decreasing means around <100Mbps.

It is due to more packet drop, As iperf is trying to send more data due to forcing to use the bandwidth more than 120M.

Thanks for the update.

I have applied the patch shared by you. Now I could able to see the UDP iperf RX performance around 160Mbps after running the iperf command like this (command: iperf -c <ip> -u -b 155M -t 10).
