OMAP-L138: Trying to verify that the OMAP-L13x is a good choice for a new design

Genius 5565 points
Part Number: OMAP-L138
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6748, OMAPL138, SYSBIOS

Hi experts,

Let me check on your latest support stance.

Does the following apply to OMAP-L13x as well?

>1) Will TI continue manufacturing and selling the TMS320C6748 processor for the forseeable future?
>Yes we will. See this link for more information: https://www.ti.com/support-quality/quality-policies-procedures/product-life-cycle.html

>2) Will TI continue to be able to offer design support and answer hardware and software questions about the TMS320C6748?
>We can no longer answer questions about the C67x software. Even though the software has no design support, we will continue providing it as a download on the website for existing customers. More information at
>https://www.ti.com/tool/PROCESSOR-SDK-OMAPL138

>For the moment we can still answer hardware questions on the forums, but we may also need to stop supporting hardware questions sometime in the next year or so.

Best regards,

  • Hello Otomo-san

Thank you for your query. OMAPL138 is a very popular device for us and customers are still shipping in high volume. However as noted in the posts, we are no longer doing SDK refreshes and given the DSP software is on TI RTOS compared to all newer devices being on Free RTOS, we are no longer supporting queries on TI RTOS and SYSBIOS for these device family.
For hardware questions no change in support model yet - but no plans to add new EVMs or support new features or verify new DDR/LPDDR memory working etc if current ones are going EOL

The device does have some unique advantages in terms of low cost, low power and DSP integration that is good for several voice/audio applications - so hard to suggest an alternative from the newer portfolio this year.

The hardware and software offering is reasonably robust for most peripherals except for peripherals like uPP etc. There are several 3P that have familiarity with design and support for this device

However as noted in the posts I do recommend letting your customer know of the risks of limited technical support on E2E if they are starting a completely new design.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

    Mukul
