TMS320C6678: Connecting a 6600 DSP with an ADS1606

Hello

I'm thinking of a new project with a TMS320C6678, in which the input data is provided by a ADS1606 (). the data sheet of the latter states that it is easy to connect to the 6600 DSP family.

Contrete I would like to ask:

1- are there examples (HW / SW), or application notes?

2- does it connect to the parallel port or to the EMIF-16?

3- would it be possible to use more than one at the same time, both connected to same bus, but with independent CS (chip select) signal? May this question should go to another thread. If so, do please tell me which one.

4- Do you think it would be easier if I consider the 66K2 family instead?

5- It would be ideal if I were able to build a prototype around an evaluation board.

Pablo,

I assume that you want to operate this in a streaming data capture mode. What sample rate will you be using?

EMIF16 could be used for connecting to this device but it does not support high bandwidth streaming data capture.

You mention wanting to connect more than one ADC to the DSP. How many ADCs do you want to connect? Are they all at the same data rate?

yes, you can see it as a stream (but it is not video). What I need is about 5 MSPS, which is the limit of the ADS1606. The measurements last a few seconds, sometimes minutes.

Are 5 MSPS (x 16 bits) a little too much for the EMIF?. I thought it was ok, please correct me if I'm wrong. Actually, I thought of using two sensors, sharing a trigger, so they come to the DSP exactly intermixed. That would make a total of 10 MSPS.

The sensor cannot do faster than 5 MSPS, so that is the limit anyway.

Hi,

From EMIF user guide, www.ti.com/.../sprugz3a.pdf. EMIF16 is clocked at CPU/6 frequency. So, for a device running at 1GHz, EMIF16 is clocked at 166.67 MHz. All references to clock/clock cycles are in terms of EMIF16 clock cycles. So running ADC at 10 MSPS should be supported using EMIF16 interface.

EMIF16 throughput is not as predictable as you might expect based on Eric's response. There are system latencies that must also be accounted. I do agree that 10MSPS should be achievable using EDMA transfers along with ADC devices like the one chosen that has a FIFO at its interface. You also asked about EVMs or Appnotes that showcase this implementation. Unfortunately, this is not available. The EVMs for the C6678 and C6657 DSPs do have the EMIF16 brought out to an expansion connector. This can be wired to a board containing the ADS1606 ADC. Similar options exist on the EVMs for our newer devices - 66AK2H14 and 66AK2E05.
