WEBENCH® Tools/LM5118: WEBENCH not launching under Window 10

Part Number: LM5118
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

I'm having difficulty launching Webench.  Any issues with Windows 10 compatibility?  When I click on "Start Design" under Single Output in the WEBENCH Designer window after I enter my input voltage, output voltage, current, and temperature requirements, it opens a new window saying, "Please wait while WEBENCH application is loading...."  But it just sits there forever!  I want to simulate the LM5118 buck/boost converter in boost mode only to determine efficiency as a function of MOSFET, inductor, and capacitor type.  LM5118 and IRF3710 MOSFETs are desirable because we already have them in our PDM system and both are available immediately from distributors.  Thanks.

  • Hi Jim,

I did not run into any issues as such using Chrome or IE but I did run into an issue with Firefox browser. Do you see something like the screenshot below? If yes, then please click on the "Get Adobe Flash Player" button that i have outlined in red and install the flash player and try again. That worked for me. Please let me know if it worked for you.

    Regards,

    Amod

  • Thanks, Amod.

That is indeed the screen I see.  I didn't click to install Adobe Flash Player because it said I would need v. 10.2.0 or greater and I have v. 29.0.0.171.  I hesitate to install a new version anyway because this is my work computer, and it could interfere with other apps.  In fact, I am going to look for Webench in the official company sites.  I'll post how it goes.

  • Hi, Amod.  I'm using IE 11.2248.14393.0.  I can "turn the crank" to trade off efficiency for BOM cost and size.  I can look up the BOM, but if I try to View/Edit BOM or View/Edit Schematic, that's when I run into the Webench Installing... endless loop.

I also tried installing and running TINA-TI, but that appears to be a whole can of worms!  I don't quite know how to get models for the components into that simulator.

Speaking of components, I'm trying to use the LM5118 with Infineon IRF3710S MOSFETs because those parts are already in the Raytheon PDM system.  I need to boost 6 V to 13 V with 2 A output current.  I have 5.5 A available at 6 V, but I obviously don't want to burn up my board, so efficiency is important.  I calculate 4.56 A draw at 95% efficiency (lots of margin), 4.81 A at 90% (a bit less margin), 5.1 A at 85% (not much margin), and 5.42 A at 80% (very marginal margin!).

    Thanks for your help.  -Jim

  • Hi Jim,

I am able to create a 6Vin, 13Vo design with 2A output current and also able to change components. I do not specifically find the IRF3710S FETs in the alternate FET list but we can take a look at that after you can provide some details on your browser and its version. Also, are you running into issue when you click "Select Alternate Part" on the BOM page? Can you please mention if it is for the M1 and M2 BOM components which are the FETs on this design?

    Regards,

    Amod

  • Hi, Amod.

I just posted above that I was using IE v. 11.2248.14393.0.  Update versions: 11.0.65 (KB4103768)  Product ID: 00150-20000-00003-AA459.

Yes, I am trying to substitute IRF3710S for M1 and M2.  I don't see "Select Alternate Part".  Here is the screen I have for the BOM:

    Thanks.  -Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks! Missed that information before. The screenshot is not coming through. Can you please attach the image as a file?

I put in snapshots below for reference.

  • TI_WEBENCH_bom_page_screenshot.docxOK.  Here's the screenshot attached.

    Thanks.

  • Thanks Jim. The view/Edit BOM should open a new window in Flash. Do you know if your window pop-ups have been disabled/blocked? Anyway, in the end, you will basically be redirected to the tool itself. Here is the LM5118 design with 5.8V-6.2Vin, 13Vo, 2A Io in the tool: webench.ti.com/.../SDP.cgi

As long as you have Flash installed and enabled, you should be able to see that design. In the "Select Alternate part" for M1/M2 which are the FETs, you should find some IRF FETs which you might find similar to IRF3710S FETs you were mentioning to see if the design works.

    Amod
