MSP-EXP430G2ET: EZ-FET backchannel UART flow control

Part Number: MSP-EXP430G2ET

Hello,

I had a question on this note from SLAU647 (rev N), in table 15, it states that the backchannel UART with flow control is only available on Rev 1.2 of the EZ-FET debugger:

Does this mean that backchannel UART flow control is not available on the MSP-EXP430G2ET Launchpad since it looks like this Launchpad uses the rev 2.0 EZ-FET?

Regards,

Munan

  • Hello Munan,

Let me dig into the details and get some clarity on this for you :)

  • Hi Munan,

It doesn't appear the latest verison of the MSP430G2ET supports the hardware handshake.

Is this what you were asking?

  • Hi Dennis,

So it seems that the RTS and CTS signals as they appear on the EZ-FET portion of the G2 Launchpad schematic is not pinned out on the G2 Launchpad. These pads in the gerber are NC.

But if the customer was to somehow bluewire them to some IOs on the G2 target device socket, would the UART hardware flow control work? Or is the firmware specific to which hardware revision it is?

    Regards,

    Munan

  • Hi Munan,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

My understanding is the IO pins designated as CTS and RTS are just general purpose IO pins controlled via software, not the UART peripheral.  On those launchpads that don't have these connections routed to the jumper block, yes, a user can make those connections manually.  But to emphasize, the software must explicity drive these during the exchange with the ez-FET.

  • Hi Dennis,

    Thanks for confirming!

    Munan
